How to use the Emergency Fund Calculator

Use your own essential monthly costs, coverage period and available savings to estimate a country-neutral emergency-fund target.

1

Choose your currency

Select the currency you use for your household budget. Enter every amount in that currency; the calculator does not convert currencies.

2

Enter costs and coverage

Add your average essential monthly costs and the whole number of months you want to cover. A 3–6 month range is common, but the right period depends on your circumstances.

3

Add savings and review the gap

Enter savings already available for emergencies. The calculator shows your target, any remaining funding gap or surplus, and a live breakdown. You can copy the scenario link to share or revisit it.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the Emergency Fund Calculator calculate?

It multiplies your essential monthly costs by your chosen coverage period to produce a recommended target. It then compares current emergency savings with that target to show a funding gap, reached-target status or surplus.

Does the calculator convert currencies?

No. Select a currency and enter all amounts in that same currency. Currency choice changes the display only, not the calculation.

How many months of costs should I cover?

Three to six months is a common planning range, but the appropriate period varies with income stability, dependants, debt, health and employment circumstances.

Are dependants added separately?

No. Include costs for everyone in your household within your essential monthly costs. The calculator does not apply a universal separate dependant adjustment.

Does this replace financial advice?

No. This is a general budgeting estimate. It does not account for country-specific taxes, benefits, healthcare costs, employment protections, debt obligations or cost-of-living differences.

Can I share a scenario?

Yes. Use the Copy scenario link button. The link contains the values you entered and your selected currency, so only share it with people you trust.

Is my information stored?

The calculation runs locally in your browser. A shared link contains only the values you explicitly enter and the selected currency.
