Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between gross salary and take-home pay?
Gross salary is your total earnings before any deductions. Take-home pay (also called net pay) is what you actually receive after federal tax, FICA, state tax, and 401(k) contributions are subtracted.
How accurate is this US salary calculator?
This calculator defaults to 2026 IRS federal brackets, standard deductions and FICA rates, with 2024 and 2025 options for prior-year estimates. It is not a payroll-withholding or tax-return calculation. State tax is excluded or an explicitly selected illustrative flat-rate estimate.
Does this calculator include state income tax?
Not as a full state-tax calculation. You can exclude state tax or select an illustrative 5% flat-rate estimate. State deductions, credits, local taxes and state-specific payroll rules are outside this version's scope.
What is the standard deduction for 2026?
For 2026, the standard deduction is $16,100 for single filers, $32,200 for married filing jointly, and $24,150 for head of household. This reduces federal taxable income before tax is calculated.
How does 401(k) affect my taxes?
Traditional 401(k) contributions are pre-tax, reducing your federal and state taxable income. However, FICA taxes (Social Security and Medicare) are still calculated on your full gross salary. Roth 401(k) contributions are post-tax and do not reduce current taxable income.
